The best adventure was the one we didn’t plan

Hi,

I was editing my latest video about sailing in Croatia when, somehow, my brain made my hand search for sea kayaking in Devon.

I found a sea kayaking safari in a place I'd never even heard of I checked how long the drive would be because I knew Bruno wouldn't want to spend hours in the car. I sent him the link, and he simply said, "Yes, let's go."

Then we had to find a hotel for two nights during the middle of the summer holidays. We looked at a few places and chose one based on the size of the car park.

Yes, the size of the car park. Don't ask me why.

Saturday was all about exploring Torbay. We wandered around, enjoyed the coastline and, at 1.30 p.m., met our guide and the rest of the group on the beach.

For the next three hours, we paddled along the coast, explored caves and had a lot of fun.

We hadn't planned anything for Sunday, but we knew we wanted more.

So I chose a walk along the coast in East Devon. It was supposed to be straightforward. Just a two-hour walk.

Then I noticed a sign and spotted a rock in the distance. My instinct told me to follow the path.

It was steep. Really steep. At times, it felt as though we were walking vertically. Eventually, our view disappeared completely. We couldn't see where we were going. We were surrounded by bushes, as though we were walking through a tunnel, with a little bit of light visible at the end.

Then we stepped out onto an empty beach.

There was nobody there.

I dipped my feet into the water, but something inside me said, "No, I need to go into the sea."

Immediately, my mind started listing all the reasons why I shouldn't.

You don't have your swimsuit.

You don't have a towel.

You'll be uncomfortable.

Then I stopped myself.

No overthinking. Just do what feels right.

So I walked into the sea wearing nothing but my underwear.

I asked Bruno if he wanted to join me. He hesitated much longer than I did, but eventually he came in too.

And, for a few minutes, we felt completely free.

Happy

Present

That unexpected swim became the highlight of our weekend. Not the kayaking trip we had carefully planned, but the spontaneous moment we never saw coming.

Sometimes, the best adventures aren't the ones you spend weeks organising.

They're the ones you simply say yes to.

Perhaps that's the secret to staying adventurous as we get older.

Not ignoring logic all the time, but occasionally being brave enough to ignore it for a few minutes.

Hey, In a few days, I’ll leave the UK and start one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever taken on. I’m travelling from the Arctic to the Mediterranean, crossing 14 countries without taking a single flight — and for most of the journey, I’ll be doing it alone. I’ll start in Lofoten, in Arctic Norway, and make my way slowly south through Sweden, Finland, the Baltics, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Albania before eventually reaching Corfu in Greece. No flights....

I lied. Or perhaps it was only a little lie — or not telling the whole truth. Everyone else on our five-day sailing trip around Croatia was travelling as a couple. I was the only solo traveller on the boat. When we arrived on the island of Vis, we knew we would spend the entire day and night there. Vis is a large island, and if you want to explore beyond the harbour, you have a few options. You can join a military tour, which did not particularly interest me, or rent a scooter and ride to the...
